Before Edith Nesbit became famous for her children's stories, she made family ends meet writing horror stories, gory stories with unhappy endings.

It's Christmas Eve and a young girl has collapsed in the hallway at Edith's Christmas party. She has been carried upstairs with the help of a handsome young stranger. He just happened to be passing the open street door, hoping to catch a glimpse of the celebrated children's author. Edith is not in the mood to be festive. She invites the stranger to hear a reading, not of the 'Railway Children', but of her horror stories: just the thing for Christmas Eve. He is not keen, but is drawn in, along with Biddy, Edith's housekeeper - who knows all about horror and untimely death. As she says in between sinking several cups of hot punch, "I've had encounters of my own you know . . ."
